Even though it is not a federal holiday, the birthday of the U.S. National Guard is celebrated on December 13 and is an important event to note. Established in 1636, the National Guard is the oldest military organization in America. Its members serve during times of war and emergency.
The United States National Guard is part of the reserve components of the United States Army and the United States Air Force. It is a military reserve force composed of National Guard military members or units of each state and the territories of Guam, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia, for a total of 54 separate organizations. All members of the National Guard of the United States are also members of the Organized Militia of the United States. National Guard units are under the dual control of the state governments and the federal government.

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, which is annually on December 7, commemorates the attack on Pearl Harbor, in Hawaii, during World War II. Many American service men and women lost their lives or were injured on December 7, 1941. National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is also referred to as Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day or Pearl Harbor Day.
More than 2000 American citizens were killed and more than 1000 were injured. The day after the attack, the United States declared war on Japan and so entered World War II. President Franklin Roosevelt in a speech to Congress stated that the bombing of Pearl Harbor was “a date which will live in infamy”.
On the direction of the President, the flag of the United States of America should be displayed on the homes of Americans, the White House and all United States government buildings. The flag should be flown at half-mast to honor those who died in the attack on Pearl Harbor.

High school students from the Frisco area will compete for college scholarships in the American Legion Post 178 Oratorical Scholarship Contest. The competition will take place in the Council Chambers at Frisco’s George A. Purefoy Municipal Center, 6101 Frisco Square Blvd, on Saturday, December 12.
Orators are required to write and memorize an original speech on some aspect of the Constitution, with emphasis on a citizen’s duties and obligations to our government. There is an additional element of the contest that requires a student to deliver extemporaneous remarks over one of four amendments to the U.S. Constitution. The specific amendment will be drawn on the day of the competition.
Four winners will be selected to proceed to the district contest in Royse City on January 2, 2021. They will compete with winners from the other posts in the 4th District. The contest is open to the public and will begin at 9 a.m. Admission is free.

Thanksgiving Day is an annual national holiday celebrating the harvest and other blessings of the past year. Thanksgiving is a great time to be thankful and appreciate who you have and what you have. It is a time for families to meet, socialize and enjoy each other’s company.
Thanksgiving tradition began in early XVII century, but the date and popularity varied between states. First nation-wide Thanksgiving was proclaimed on November 26, 1789 by George Washington. The contemporary date of fourth Thursday of November was set in 1941 by federal legislation.

Veterans Day is a time for all to pay respects to those who have served. For one day, we stand united in respect for our veterans. This holiday started as a day to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our country’s service and was originally called Armistice Day. It fell on Nov. 11 because that is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. However, in 1954, the holiday was changed to “Veterans Day” to account for all veterans in all wars. We celebrate and honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice.
