Major Gary Billings, USMC, Retired, Senior Military Science Instructor for the Navy National Defense Cadet Program at Lebanon Trail High School

A Veterans Day Ceremony to celebrate and honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice will be held on November 10, 2023, at 11 a.m. at the Frisco Veterans Memorial in Frisco Commons Park, 8000 McKinney Road, Frisco, TX 75033.

The American Legion Post 178 is coordinating the ceremony.

The ceremony will include a special welcome from Mayor Jeff Cheney. The keynote speaker will be Major Gary Billings, USMC, Retired, Senior Naval Science Instructor at Lebanon Trail High School with the Navy National Defense Cadet Corps FISD program.

Major Billings enlisted in 1998 in Seattle, Washington. He attended Officer Candidate School after graduating from Penn State University in 2005. He was deployed to Iraq in 2007 and to the Middle East in 2008 with the US Navy. He was in Haiti in response to the 2010 earthquakes, and in 2014 in Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom. He also holds an MA from Marshall University. He retired in 2020 after 22 years of service.

The public and all veterans are invited to attend. Seating will be available.

Bonham Veteran Home Christmas Donation Drive

For the ninth year, Post 178 will provide needed hygiene, clothing, and other personal items through donations for the 141 veterans that reside at the Texas State Veterans Home in Bonham, Texas.

Donations may be cash, check, credit card or the specific Items below. All may be turned in at the October 16 and November 28 Membership Meetings.  Donation alternatives include:

  • If cash, give it to the Finance Officer or Commander.
  • If check, make payable to American Legion Post 178 with a note for Clyde Cosper Veterans Home and send to Terry Meyering, Post Finance Officer, 7763 Sunflower Way, Frisco, TX 75033.
  • If credit card, click https://friscolegion.org/donate and click the Donate Now button for Bonham State Veterans Home.

Donation items needed include:

  • Men’ s new undershirts (sizes L, XL)
  • Griper nubby socks only (one size fits all)
  • Deodorant
  • Body Wash & shampoo combination (AXE or Dove tag brands at the Dollar store)
  • Toothbrush/toothpaste
  • Chocolate and hard candy (individual bags)
  • Any salty snacks (individual bags)
  • Assorted snack cakes
  • Nuts in a small can or jar
  • Chapstick
  • Pull over hat and gloves

Donations may also be dropped off at John Allen’s home. Please do not donate lap blankets or regular blankets, bars of soap, puzzles, or magazines. No donation is too small, and all are appreciated.
