The Denton County Veteran Service office is proud to announce a sixth permanent location for Veterans Service. The Commissioner Court approved location at the Frisco Government Center rounds out permanent services in all Precincts of Denton County. The office in Frisco is located in the Frisco Government Center, 5533 FM 423 in Suite 801. The Frisco Office as well as the offices in the Southwest Courthouse and the Sandy Jacobs Government Center will have available services every Friday.
In addition to our 3 Friday locations we continue to serve Veterans and their Families in the Denton County Government Center, Precinct 3 Government Center and Texas Veterans Commission services are available at the Denton County Veteran Center. All locations are by appointment, scheduled though our main office by calling 940-349-2950. Appointments in the Veteran Center scheduled by calling 940-566-5851 ext. 113.
We have received positive feedback for our scheduled appointment system versus the old “arrival and wait process”. We do have limited walk-in services for emergencies in the Mary & Jim Horn Government Center, or special needs situations. A scheduled appointment is our best way to provide superior customer service, keeping with the motto of “Providing customer service to our Veterans and family members with an attitude of gratitude”.

On President’s Day Weekend, the top student orators in the state will arrive in Frisco in hopes of winning the top honors in the annual Oratorical Competition of the American Legion, Department of Texas.
Over the 23 Legion districts of Texas, students have been competing with their presentation of original speeches on the subject of the U.S. Constitution. Each of the 23 districts selected a winner to send to one of the four Legion division contests. Now, the top speakers from those divisions have reached the penultimate round, and will vie on President’s Day in front of a distinguished judging panel to be named state champion. $5,000 in scholarship prizes will be awarded across the four state finalists.
The competition will take place at the Frisco ISD Administration building in the Boardroom. Orators were required to write and memorize an original speech on some aspect of the Constitution, with emphasis on a citizen’s duties and obligations to our government, and have been using this oratory throughout the competition. There is an additional element of the contest where a student must deliver extemporaneous remarks over one of four amendments to the U.S. Constitution, and the specific amendment will be drawn on the day of the competition.
After winning on President’s Day, the 2019 Texas state champion will then advance to the National Competition in Indianapolis to compete against 54 other students from across the U.S., for a pool of $160,000 in scholarships.
American Legion Peter J Courcy Post 178 of Frisco is proud to have been selected to host the state competition for 2019. “It is a distinct honor for Post 178 to be chosen to host this highly-renowned contest,” observes Post Commander Fred Rogers.
Many volunteers from Post 178 and American Legion Auxiliary 178 are assisting with mounting the competition, as well as with a banquet for the finalists and their families on the night before the contest. During the weekend of the finals, Post 178 and the Frisco area will be host to many state officials and dignitaries from the Legion Department of Texas
The competition is open to the public, and begins at 9:00 am on Monday, February 18, 2019 at the FISD Administration Building, 5515 Ohio Drive, Frisco, Texas 75035. Admission is free.

The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) continue to team up to combat illegal robocalls targeting Americans, including Veterans and their families.
Each year, the FCC receives more than 200,000 complaints about unwanted calls. While this may seem like a big number, it pales in comparison to the millions of robocalls being made each day. The calls interrupt dinners and family time; they flood landline and mobile phones. Scam calls frequently solicit money for fake charities, including ones claiming to support America’s Veterans – some even claiming to be VA representatives.
We know that scam activity increases during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, so the FCC and VA urge you to be vigilant. We offer the following tips to help you avoid unwanted calls and scams.
- Don’t answer calls from unknown numbers. Scammers may spoof their caller ID to display a fake number that appears to be local. If you answer such a call, hang up immediately.
- Never give out personal information such as account numbers, Social Security numbers, mother’s maiden names, or passwords in response to unexpected or suspicious calls.
- Be sure to set a password for all voice mail accounts to avoid being hacked.
- Register your number on the Do Not Call List to block calls from legitimate telemarketers.
- Ask your phone company about call-blocking tools and services for your landline phone, and check for helpful apps that you can download to your mobile phone.
Please help spread the word about robocall fraud among those who may need assistance particularly those who are frequently targeted by phone scams.

The Post 178 Color Guard presented the Colors during a pep rally at Lakeside Middle School, Little Elm, on November 9th. Post member Felipe Vargas is the Vice Principal at the school and under his direction this was the first time the students had seen the Colors presented.

Veterans Day is intended to thank all those who honorably served in the military – in war time or peace time.
Veterans Day is observed every year on November 11th. Veterans Day was originally called “Armistice Day” when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed this day in November 1919. Armistice is when warring parties agree to stop fighting and “Armistice Day” recognizes the end of World War 1 when hostilities ceased on November 11th at 11 A.M, 1918 (11th hour, of the 11th, of the 11th month).
On May 13th, 1938 Armistice Day was declared a legal holiday each year. A day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace. Originally Armistice Day only honored veterans of World War.
On November 11th, 1947 Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran, organized a “National Veterans Day” parade in Birmingham, Alabama to recognize veterans of all wars.
This celebration led to Congress changing Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954 to recognize Veterans of all U.S. wars.
