Happy 2nd Anniversary Post 178 – Mar 22, 2016, is our 2nd birthday for Frisco Peter J Courcy American Legion Post 178 for the signing of our permanent Charter. We have grown quickly to 212 members and accomplished much in our community during our short tenure.
Frisco American Legion Post 178 wishes to thank Hillwood Properties, developer of Frisco Station for their generous donation to send Frisco 11th grade boys and girls to the 2016 Texas Boys and Girls State program in June.
American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for high school students. It is a participatory program where each student becomes a part of the operation of his local, county, and state government.
Mayor Maso and the Frisco City Council recognized Yolian Ogbu for her commitment to citizenship. March 1, 2016 is now “Yolian Ogbu Day”. Yolian Ogbu, an eleventh grade student at Lone Star High School, represented American Legion Post 178 at the American Legion Oratorical Contest in December. The contest is an academic speaking challenge meant to develop deeper knowledge in the U.S. Constitution among high school students.
Frisco TX – Frisco’s Peter J Courcy American Legion Post 178 is pleased to announce the election and installation of our new Post Service Officer. Fred Rogers, Post 178 Commander commented that Post 178 is named in honor and memory of Cpl. Peter J. Courcy, a Frisco resident, who was killed in action in 2009 in Salerno, Afghanistan, during Operation Enduring Freedom.
According to Commander Rogers “We are proud to announce the election of Kevin Robinson to this important position. Kevin is a retired USAF veteran and understands the needs of our local veterans and is dedicated to helping area veterans receive the benefits and help that their country promised and owes them.”
Sunday, September 25th is Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day 2016. This last Sunday in September, which began as Gold Star Mother’s Day in 1936, is a day for our nation to recognize the sacrifice that all Gold Star Family members make when a father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, or other loved one dies in service to the nation.
Thank you to all the military families, service members and veterans for your service. Our great Nation is stronger and safer because of your sacrifice.

The term Gold Star family is a modern reference that comes from the Service Flag. These flags/banners were first flown by families during World War I. The flag included a blue star for every immediate family member serving in the armed forces of the United States, during any period of war or hostilities in which the armed forces of the United States were engaged. If that loved one died, the blue star was replaced by a gold star. This allowed members of the community to know the price that the family had paid in the cause of freedom.
The United States began observing Gold Star Mothers Day on the last Sunday of September, in 1936. The Gold Star Wives was formed before the end of World War II. The Gold Star Lapel Button was established in August 1947.
Sep 18, 2016 – Observances of National POW/MIA Recognition Day are held across the country on military installations, ships at sea, state capitols, schools and veterans’ facilities. It is traditionally observed on the third Friday in September each year. This observance is one of six days throughout the year that Congress has mandated the flying of the National League of Families’ POW/MIA flag. The others are Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day.
The flag is to be flown at major military installations, national cemeteries, all post offices, VA medical facilities, the World War II Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the official offices of the secretaries of state, defense and veterans affairs, the director of the selective service system and the White House.

FRISCO TEXAS – The American Legion Auxiliary, Peter J Courcy Unit 178 was recently organized and elected their officers. American Legion Auxiliary Unit 178 will be led by Phyllis Sutton, President.
President Sutton stated “The vision of the American Legion Auxiliary is to support American Legion Post 178 and become the premier service organization and foundation of Frisco and surrounding communities providing support for our veterans, our military, and their families by shaping a positive future in an atmosphere of fellowship, patriotism, peace and security”.
A woman who is eligible for membership in The American Legion is also eligible to join the American Legion Auxiliary. Additionally, the mother, wife, daughter, sister, granddaughter, great-grand-daughter, or grandmother of members of The American Legion, and deceased veterans who honorably served in the United States Armed Forces during the war-time eras as specified by Congress are eligible for membership.

Purple Heart Day is observed August 7th in the United States and commemorates the establishment in 1782 of the Badge of Military Merit, an award created by George Washington to honor soldiers for their distinguished action in battle. The Purple Heart was not used after the Revolutionary War, but was restored in 1931 with a new design. It is awarded to any member of the Armed Forces that has been wounded or killed, died as a result of a wound in battle, or otherwise designated by the President of the United States. This year also commemorates the 71st anniversary of the end of World War II and the 41st anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.
2016 marks the 226th anniversary of the United States Coast Guard. On Aug. 4, 1790, the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service, one of five federal services that would eventually make up the Coast Guard, was established under the control of the Treasury Department. Over the next century, four more distinct and separate federal services would be amalgamated to become the U.S. Coast Guard. While the service’s missions have grown and evolved over the 226 years of its history, today the Coast Guard remains concentrated on ensuring the safety, security, and prosperity of the nation and its citizens. This edition of Coast Guard Outlook commemorates the anniversary and history of the sea service while describing its present-day programs, missions, and operations as well as its future.
