If you suffered a loss due to the extreme cold weather last week the following funding alternatives are available if specific requirements are met.
On February 22, 2021, a Presidential Disaster Declaration was issued that included both Collin and Denton Counties. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) may provide money to assist with losses not covered by insurance; however, there are limits as to what may be covered. Residents must apply online for FEMA assistance at DisasterAssistance.gov or call 1-800-621-3362 or 1-800-462-7585.
The American Legion also has additional potential funding programs:
- National Emergency Fund (legion.org/emergency)
The NEF was established to aid American Legion Family members as the result of natural disasters. The fund provides up to $3.000 for qualifies Legion Family members if eligibility requirements are met.
2. Temporary Financial Assistance (legion.org/financialassistance)
The TFA awards cash grants to minor children of current active duty and American Legion members. These grants help families in need meet the cost of shelter, food, utilities, and health expenses. A single onetime non-repayable Temporary Financial Assistance grant up to $1,000 is permitted for the minor child(ren) of a qualifying veteran,
3. Post 178 also has a fund for temporary assistance and works with the North Texas Veterans Center.
