Nearly 100 entries made up this year’s Frisco Community Parade. Thank you to everyone who participated, not to mention the volunteers along with FISD and City of Frisco staff who worked to make the 2014 parade a success! A special welcome and ‘shout out’ to the Independence High Knights, who participated for the first time. Super cool colors and your band sounded great! Thanks to Johnny B of 97.5 KLAK radio for being our emcee. Thanks to School of Rock for your support. Finally, we want to express our gratitude to the men and women of our military, past and present. We were honored to have WWII veteran Bob Smith serve as today’s parade Grand Marshal. Thank you for your service, Veterans!

The Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County’s 22nd annual Teddy Bear Ride was held Sunday, Oct. 26. The Teddy Bear Ride, our longest-standing fundraising event, generates much needed support to provide safety, healing and justice to abused and neglected children of Collin County. Riders who participate in this wonderful event also contribute lovable teddy bears to stock the Center’s Teddy Bear Room. Each bear will provide comfort to a child victimized by abuse or neglect. Hundreds of people attended Frisco’s Memorial Day service at the Veteran’s Memorial at Frisco Commons, 8000 McKinney Road. The annual ceremony was hosted by the Frisco VFW and Frisco Garden Club. Frisco council member and MAJ Tim Nelson served as Master of Ceremonies. Mayor Maher Maso and Frisco VFW Post Commander Neal Litton shared remarks. Past Frisco VFW Post Commander Lee Myrben encouraged folks to honor loved ones by participating in the ‘Walk of Honor’ brick program underway.

The keynote speaker was U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson, COL, Retired, USAF. Sam Johnson, a decorated war hero and native Texan, ranks among the few members of Congress to fight in combat. During his 29-year career in the U.S. Air Force, Representative Johnson flew combat missions in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He endured nearly seven years as a Prisoner of War in Hanoi, including 42 months in solitary confinement.

The service concluded with a special presentation and dedication of a park trail to the memory of SGT Michael ‘Luke’ Boatright. SGT. Boatright grew up in Frisco, attended Frisco High and joined the U.S. Army in 1997. He served as a combat engineer in the 20th Engineer Battalion, 1st Calvary Division, Fort Hood, TX. Follwoing 9-11, SGT. Boatright was deployed to Iraq in March. He was killed in action in Baghdad, December 4, 2004.
