Christmas is celebrated on December 25 and is both a sacred religious holiday and a worldwide cultural and commercial phenomenon. For two millennia, people around the world have been observing it with traditions and practices that are both religious and secular in nature. Christians celebrate Christmas Day as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, a spiritual leader whose teachings form the basis of their religion. Popular customs include exchanging gifts, decorating Christmas trees, attending church, sharing meals with family and friends and, of course, waiting for Santa Claus to arrive. December 25—Christmas Day—has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1870.

Despite cold and a persistent wind, thousands of volunteers lined up at DFW National Cemetery to place wreaths on National Wreaths Across America Day. Photo by Ed Reed.
American Legion Post 178, for the eighth consecutive year, participated in the 2021 National Wreaths Across America Day activities at the DFW National Cemetery. Veterans volunteered to assist with unloading of approximately 8,000 boxes of wreaths on December 17 and the placement of more than 48,000 wreaths on December 18. Although the temperature hovered around 50 degrees and a strong north wind persisted, a substantial number of volunteers attended the event. Post members will also assist with the removal of wreaths on January 15, 2022.
National Wreaths Across America Day is the culmination of a yearlong mission to Remember the fallen, Honor those who serve and Teach the next generation the value of freedom. This mission is in part conducted each December with the placement of sponsored veterans’ wreaths on the headstones of those who have served our country. By coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at more than 3,100 participating locations around the country, Wreaths Across America strives to remember our fallen heroes. The day honors those who served. And it teaches our children about the sacrifices made by veterans and their families to preserve our freedoms. Remember. Honor. Teach.

Each December on National Wreaths Across America Day, the mission to Remember the Fallen, Honor those who Serve, and Teach our children the value of Freedom, is conducted by coordinating Remembrance wreath-laying ceremonies at more than 2,100 locations , including the DFW National Cemetery, in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad.
Today, a Wreaths Across America ceremony will be held at DFW National Cemetery to Remember and Honor our veterans through the laying of Remembrance wreaths on the graves of our country’s fallen heroes.
REMEMBER our veterans that served and are serving America, HONOR the fallen veterans, and TEACH our youth about the service and sacrifice of our veterans and families.

Dec. 13 is the birthday of the National Guard. On this date in 1636, the first militia regiments in North America organized in Massachusetts. Based upon an order of the Massachusetts Bay Colony’s General Court, the colony’s militia was organized into three permanent regiments to defend the colony better. Today, the descendants of these first regiments – the 181st infantry, the 182nd infantry, the101st Field Artillery, and 101st Engineer Battalion of the Massachusetts Army National Guard – share the distinction of being the oldest units in the U.S. military. Dec. 13, 1636, thus marks the beginning of the organized militia, and the birth of the National Guard’s oldest organized units is symbolic of the founding of all the state, territory and District of Columbia militias that collectively make up today’s National Guard.
Even though it’s not a federal holiday, the birthday of the U.S. National Guard is an important event to note. The National Guard is the oldest military organization in America. Its members serve during times of war and emergency. Take time to honor those who have protected our country for centuries.

Four high school students from the Frisco area were named winners and received $250 college scholarships at the American Legion Post 178 Oratorical Scholarship Contest. The competition was held at The Grove at Frisco Commons on Saturday, December 11. The four orators will now compete at the district contest in Royse City on January 8, 2022, with other post winners from the 4th District.
Each contestant delivered a prepared oration as well as an oration on a randomly assigned constitutional topic. The four winners were Emma A. Ko, a senior, home school; Pranav Kalkunte, junior, Independence High School; Mishaal Qureshi, senior, Reedy High School; and Jedaiah D. Ward, junior, home school.
The American Legion Oratorical Scholarship Program began in 1938 and encourages high school students to study the U.S. Constitution and improve their public speaking skills. Post 178 annually holds this contest for students in the Frisco area to develop deeper knowledge and appreciation for the U.S. Constitution. The contest presents an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation’s laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights, and privileges of American citizenship.
